Have you ever noticed—it’s late at night, and you just can’t fall asleep?
Your mind won’t stop racing. The world has been tugging at your heart, thrashing about, trying to unseat your peace. Maybe you prayed earlier—for someone you love, a family member, a friend in need. Yourself. But still, the weight lingers.
The news slaps you with fear. AI is going to take over the world. A new virus is about to descend. Economic collapse. War. Famine. It’s always something. Fear rolls in waves, relentless, and it can rattle the faith of Yahweh’s people.
But we’ve been given something powerful to counter it—
Speaking in tongues.
“For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God…”
— 1 Corinthians 14:2
Imagine that. You speak directly to the Creator.
Impossible?
“For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.”
Mysteries. Secrets. Divine speech.
And just to be clear—nowhere in Scripture does it say that this ability ended with the apostles. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.
When we speak in tongues, we don’t know exactly what we’re saying. Our mind is bypassed. But God does. It’s communication not born of this world. This is Spirit-born language, reserved for the new creation within you. A manifestation of Christ in you, the hope of glory.
Maybe you don’t even know who you’re praying for. Or why. But you feel inspired to do so. And when you speak in tongues, you’re speaking divine secrets—heavenly counsel—without your intellect interfering. It is unique to those who possess the Spirit of God in Christ in them. Sometimes, we just don’t know what to pray for, but we know we must.
“Likewise, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses: for we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit itself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered (understood). And He who searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”—Romans 8:26–27
So there you are, wondering, what should I pray for? There’s so much…
You begin speaking in tongues.
Suddenly, your soul quiets. Your mind settles. The world and its terrors begin to drift away.
Peace returns.
And you realize—you are in conversation with the Creator of heaven and earth. You are safe in the presence of the One who is truly in control—whose kingdom will come on earth as it is in heaven.
When we don’t know what to pray for—or who to pray for—we can speak in tongues.
As often as we desire to do so.
“For if I pray in a tongue, my Spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.
What am I to do? I will pray with my Spirit, but I will pray with my mind also;
I will sing praise with my Spirit, but I will sing with my mind also.”
— 1 Corinthians 14:14–15
When we pray in the Spirit, the mind rests. The striving stops. It’s not a prayer we crafted. It’s a perfect prayer. Not self-serving. Not limited by our knowledge. It’s released to the One who knows all.
Why wait for difficulty?
Why wait for crisis?
“I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.”
— 1 Corinthians 14:18
That was the Apostle Paul.
And if he needed it—you better believe we do too.
“For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God . . .” Acts 10 46
